Position Summary:

The Scenic Carpenter at The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is responsible for constructing, assembling, and installing scenic elements for our theatrical productions. This role requires a skilled carpenter with experience in scenic construction and a strong understanding of theatrical design and production techniques. The Scenic Carpenter works closely with the Master Carpenter, Scenic Designers, and other production staff to bring creative visions to life on stage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Construction and Fabrication:

  • Build and assemble scenic elements, including sets, props, and special effects, based on technical drawings and design specifications.
  • Utilize carpentry, woodworking, and construction techniques to create high-quality scenic pieces.
  • Ensure all constructed elements meet safety standards and production specifications.

Installation and Strike:

  • Assist with the installation and rigging of scenic elements on stage.
  • Participate in the strike and removal of scenic elements after productions.
  • Ensure all installations are secure and safe for performers and crew.

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on scenic elements as needed during the production run.
  • Maintain and repair shop equipment and tools.
  • Keep an organized and clean work area.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Master Carpenter, Scenic Designers, and other production staff to achieve design objectives.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure accurate and timely completion of projects.
  • Participate in production meetings as required.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow all safety regulations and best practices in scenic construction and installation.
  • Conduct safety checks on constructed elements and report any issues.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Project Management:

  • Assist in tracking progress and ensuring all projects are completed on time.
  • Manage assigned tasks and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Report any issues or delays to the Master Carpenter or Technical Director.

Skills and Qualifications:

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or education in technical theater, carpentry, or a related field preferred.

Experience in Job Type:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in scenic construction or carpentry, preferably in a theatrical or production environment.

Skills Required:

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong carpentry and woodworking skills, including knowledge of tools and materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in scenic construction.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment.
