Lead Metal Fabricator

Time Commitment: 40 hours per week
Job Summary: The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Metal Fabricator to join our production team. The Lead Metal Fabricator will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and installation of metalwork for theatrical productions. This role requires strong technical skills, creativity, and the ability to collaborate with designers and other production staff. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in metal fabrication, welding, and structural design, with a keen eye for detail and safety.
Responsibilities:
Fabrication and Welding:
- Lead the design, fabrication, and assembly of metal structures, including set pieces, props, and rigging components.
- Perform various welding techniques for steel and aluminum, including MIG, TIG, and Arc welding, ensuring high-quality and precise welds.
- Cut, shape, and assemble metal materials according to technical drawings and specifications.
Project Management:
- Collaborate with designers, technical directors, and other production staff to determine metal fabrication needs for each production.
- Develop project timelines and ensure that all metal fabrication tasks are completed on schedule.
- Coordinate with other departments to integrate metalwork with scenic, lighting, and automation elements.
Installation and Maintenance:
- Oversee the installation of metal structures and components, ensuring proper fit and function.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of metalwork to ensure safety and durability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to metal fabrication and installation.
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all metal fabrication activities adhere to industry safety standards and regulations.
- Conduct safety training for staff and crew on the proper use of metalworking tools and equipment.
- Develop and implement emergency procedures for metal fabrication and welding operations.
Team Leadership:
- Lead, train, and supervise the metal fabrication team, including fabricators and welders.
- Foster a positive and collaborative working environment within the department.
- Assign tasks and responsibilities to team members, ensuring efficient workflow.
Documentation and Inventory:
- Maintain accurate documentation of all metal fabrication projects, including drawings, schematics, and maintenance records.
- Manage inventory of metalworking tools, equipment, and materials, ensuring adequate supplies and timely replacements.
- Prepare and maintain budget reports for metal fabrication projects.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Metal Fabrication, Welding Technology, or related field preferred; or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience in Job Type:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in metal fabrication and welding, including supervisory experience.
- Required Skills:
- Proficiency in various welding techniques and metalworking tools.
- Strong knowledge of structural design and engineering principles.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Effective communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by production schedules.
- Physical ability to lift and move heavy equipment and materials.
