Position Summary:The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is seeking a talented and creative Scenic Artist to join our production team. The Scenic Artist will be responsible for creating and painting backdrops, set pieces, and other scenic elements to enhance the visual storytelling of our productions. This role requires strong artistic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively to achieve the artistic vision of each production.

Responsibilities:

Set Painting:

  • Collaborate with the Scenic Artist Charge and other production team members to understand the artistic vision and requirements for each production.
  • Create and execute detailed paint treatments and scenic designs for backdrops, set pieces, and other scenic elements.
  • Use various painting techniques, including textures, gradients, and special effects, to achieve the desired look.

Preparation and Application:

  • Prepare surfaces for painting, including priming and sealing as needed.
  • Ensure all scenic elements are painted according to design specifications and within production timelines.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality and consistency in all painted elements.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with other members of the scenic and production teams to coordinate and complete scenic painting tasks.
  • Attend production meetings and design discussions to provide input and feedback on scenic artwork.
  • Communicate any issues or concerns related to scenic painting to the Scenic Designer and Production Manager.

Maintenance and Organization:

  • Maintain an organized workspace and manage painting supplies and tools.
  • Clean and store equipment properly after use.
  • Assist with the repair and touch-up of scenic elements as needed.

Health and Safety:

  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures when using paints, solvents, and other materials.
  • Ensure that the painting environment is safe and free from hazards.

Skills and Qualifications:

Experience in Job Type: Previous experience as a Scenic Artist or in a related field (e.g., muralist, decorative painter).

Skills Required:

  • Strong artistic skills and experience with various painting techniques and materials.
  • Ability to interpret and execute scenic designs from sketches and renderings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work within deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by production schedules.
  • Physical ability to lift and move heavy materials and work on ladders or scaffolding.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation: $18 to $20 per hour DOE
